Camillus, initially an unlikely candidate for sainthood due to a troubled past marked by family neglect and a penchant for gambling, underwent a transformative conversion.

After various setbacks, including a persistent leg disease, he found purpose in serving the sick. Influenced by Saint Philip Neri, he studied for the priesthood and, against advice, left San Giacomo to establish his congregation.

Dedicating himself to the care of the sick, Camillus emphasized charity and ensured hospitals maintained cleanliness and technical competence. His community served prisoners, plague victims, and soldiers on the battlefield, pioneering military field ambulances. 

In Naples, he intervened on plague-ridden galleys, preventing premature burials. Despite his lifelong leg ailment, Camillus continued caring for patients until his last breath, exemplifying compassion and selflessness.
